Linear bearings generally use a pad, bushing, or roller system to carry a load on a rail that need not be a straight line. The rail can be most any length, although that dimension is limited by the actuator. The durability of the bearing is determined by the load and required speed. Furthermore, rails can generally be any profile – simple flat surfaces, round polished rods, or complex profiles with polished ground surfaces on which balls or cylindrical rollers can ride. Hard (Rockwell 60) and ground bearing surfaces work best. Further classifications might be by size. For instance, miniature linear bearings might work well moving a biologic slide sample just a few millimeters beneath a microscope lens while industrial-bearings on injection molding machines carry tooling of several tons.

A pillow block bearing consists of a mounting bracket (pillow block) that houses a bearing and is used in low-torque, light load applications. With this configuration, the pillow block is bolted to a foundation, securing it, while the shaft and the inner ring of the bearing are free to rotate. Usually made of gray cast iron, pillow blocks come in two types, split or unsplit. With split pillow blocks the housing element or cap can be separated from the base. An unsplit pillow block is made from one solid piece. Often, the terms pillow block bearing and plumber block bearing are used synonymously but the two are different devices. Both are designed to be mounted to a surface through mounting holes on the base of the block. They differ in that plumber block bearings do contain an inner bearing and they are also designed for higher loads and more corrosive environments.

Cylindrical roller bearings are available in a wide range of designs, series, variants and sizes. The main design differences are the number of roller rows and the inner/outer ring flanges as well as cage designs and materials. The bearings can meet the challenges of applications faced with heavy radial loads and high speeds. Accommodating axial displacement (except for bearings with flanges on both the inner and outer rings), they offer high stiffness, low friction and long service life. Cylindrical roller bearings are also available in sealed or split designs. In sealed bearings, the rollers are protected from contaminants, water and dust, while providing lubricant retention and contaminant exclusion. This provides lower friction and longer service life. Split bearings are intended primarily for bearing arrangements which are difficult to access, such as crank shafts, where they simplify maintenance and replacements.

A spherical roller bearing is a rolling-element bearing that permits rotation with low friction, and permits angular misalignment. Typically these bearings support a rotating shaft in the bore of the inner ring that may be misaligned in respect to the outer ring. The misalignment is possible due to the spherical internal shape of the outer ring and spherical rollers. Despite what their name may imply, spherical roller bearings are not truly spherical in shape. The rolling elements of spherical roller bearings are mainly cylindrical in shape, but have a profile that makes them appear like cylinders that have been slightly over-inflated.

Roller bearings — also known as rolling-element bearings — are similar to ball bearings in that they are designed to carry a load while minimizing friction.

Angular contact ball bearings have inner and outer ring raceways that are displaced relative to each other in the direction of the bearing axis. This means that these bearings are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads. The axial load carrying capacity of angular contact ball bearings increases as the contact angle increases. The contact angle is defined as the angle between the line joining the points of contact of the ball and the raceways in the radial plane, along which the combined load is transmitted from one raceway to another, and a line perpendicular to the bearing axis

Deep groove ball bearings are the most common type of ball bearing. They are commonly used in electric motors and in household appliances, car motors, office machinery, automation control, and garden and household tools. They have deep raceway grooves and their race dimensions are close to the dimensions of the balls that run inside.

A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a predominantly axial load. Thrust bearings are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. They are also used in the main and tail rotor blade grips of RC (radio controlled) helicopters. Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with. Thrust bearings are also used with radio antenna masts to reduce the load on an antenna rotator. One specific thrust bearing in an automobile is the clutch

Ball bearings, or deep-groove bearings, extend the working life of equipment by enabling wheels, pulleys, and other rotating parts to reduce friction and move smoothly. Ball bearings have a series of round balls encased in a housing and support high axial or low-to-moderate radial loads. Axial (thrust) bearings support loads parallel to the axis, such as those exerted by a table supporting a weight. Radial bearings support loads where the force of the load is perpendicular to the shaft, such as those exerted by a rotating wheel. Angular (linear) bearings have two rows of balls set at an angle to one another for use with radial and axial loads. Ball screw support bearings are high-precision angular bearings used to support high loads and restrict axial movement for precise positioning for machining and other ball screw applications. Agricultural disc bearings are used in high-impact industrial applications where the bearing is exposed to high levels of dirt or other contaminants.
