China’s wind power industry: technologies and challenges in moving towards the international market

2023-12-22

Recently, Qin Haiyan said in an interview with Shell Finance that China’s wind power industry has become an important part of globalization and has shown strong strength in international market competition. Since exporting its first wind turbine in 2007, China has made remarkable achievements in 49 countries around the world. Qin Haiyan analyzed that Chinese wind power companies not only focus on “selling wind turbines”, but also cover multiple aspects of wind power project construction, such as financing, certification, and construction and installation.

Qin Haiyan mentioned that China’s export capacity of wind turbines continues to grow, and complete machine manufacturers are increasingly participating in the international market. China's leading position in wind power technology, coupled with its rich product portfolio and status as the world's largest wind power equipment manufacturing base, provides the global market with technologically advanced and cost-effective products.

Despite this, Chinese wind power companies also face many challenges when entering the international market. The complex geopolitical environment and trade barriers are major obstacles. In addition, the business requirements of the European and American markets are different from those of the domestic market, such as the emphasis on long-term profitability of projects. Qin Haiyan pointed out that Chinese enterprises need to further improve their international operation capabilities, strengthen legal compliance and localized operations to deal with these challenges.

He finally emphasized the importance of accelerating global wind power development and strengthening international cooperation. He pointed out that all countries should jointly safeguard trade rules and provide fair market access opportunities for all companies. The EU's plan to increase installed wind power capacity provides Chinese wind power companies with new opportunities to export to Europe. He said that through international cooperation, Chinese wind power companies will play a key role in global carbon neutrality efforts.
